Coffee with a Curator: St Martin’s on the Hill: A Hidden Pre-Raphaelite Gem

January 31, 2023 11am at Online via zoom
Join curator Helen Elletson to learn about the Decoration of St Martin’s on the Hill, Scarborough.
The recently formed Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Company were commissioned by George Frederick Bodley to design the complete decoration for his newly built Scarborough church, completed in 1863. The spectacular interior took ten years to complete and it is a show-piece of Pre-Raphaelite design involving William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones, Ford Madox Brown, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Philip Webb, amongst others.
It was William Morris who contributed the beautiful painted ceiling design for the East wall, with its rich red and green floral repeating pattern. The William Morris Society is fortunate to hold the original pencil and watercolour design for the East wall of St Martin’s church in its collection, and this will be examined in relation to the interior as a whole.
Please join us to explore one of the most comprehensive collections of Pre-Raphaelite art to be found in any church.
