Perpetuating the memory of one of the greatest men of the Victorian age

David Rainger 1921-2019

Posted on January 7, 2020

We were saddened to learn of the recent death of David Rainger, who was an active member of The William Morris Society for many years and served as Chairman in 1996, the centenary year of Morris’s death which was marked by a number of special events, many of them organised by David. He particularly enjoyed leading a tour entitled ‘William Morris Spoke Here’, speaking at the same locations as Morris, calling for workers to join the struggle to reshape the world. With his wife Margaret, he was also involved in making a new catalogue for the Society’s library, as well as commissioning a handsome new oak bookcase for the library.

David died quietly at home on 29th December 2019 aged 98, and his funeral will be at Kingston Crematorium at 2.15pm on Friday 31st January.  This will be followed by a gathering in the upstairs room of the Royal Oak in New Malden, from around 4pm.  WMS members are very welcome to attend either or both events and the family will be delighted if anyone would be willing to speak about their memories of David. Please email the Society if you wish us to pass on a message to David’s family.
